SUSAN MOORE

Artistic Director, Sue Moore, is a seasoned opera performer and a specialist in directing, performing for, and working with young people. Formerly Artistic Director of W11 Opera, Sue directed The Price (Eastman/Hepplewhite) for them in 2016. She revived Tim Yealland’s production of Shackleton’s Cat in 2018 for English Touring Opera & directed/designed the World Premiere of The Casket Girl (Eastman/Hepplewhite) for Jubilee Opera at the Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh in 2019. Other W11 Opera productions include: Cutlass Crew (Sturrock/Hancock) and Shadowtracks (Jones/Grant). In response to the pandemic, Sue moved W11 Opera entirely online, creating a one hour film, Jukebox. In 2021 she developed a second film, It’s Your Move (Original Story & Script - Sue Moore, Song Lyrics - Tim Yealland, Music - Russell Hepplewhite). As a performer Sue has created the roles of Valentina (Laika), Mrs. Plumpster/Ferdinand (Borka), and Milly (Silver Electra) for English Touring Opera.

In 2018 she began working as a freelance arts administrator. In addition, in 2019, she became the Company Manager for W11 Opera and supported their 2019 production Ever Young (Eastman/Hepplewhite) and helped to run their two online productions, Jukebox and It's Your Move (Moore/Yealland/Hepplewhite), during the pandemic.

A drawing by John Burningham of Borka watching as a flock of geese fly away against a pink sunset

From page to stage

John Burningham, the writer & illustrator of Borka, created a beautiful world for our tenacious but flawed heroine.  Burningham often used elements of his own life & experiences in his story telling & always favoured the underdog over more traditional protagonists.  Ignite Music invite you into the world of Borka, including the vivid colours and illustrations from the book alongside live performance, as you join her in the marshes on the East coast of England and travel with her on her adventures as she makes new friends and life changing discoveries...

Borka: The Opera was created in 2014 by librettist Tim Yealland and composer Russell Hepplewhite, based on the story book by John Burningham.  It toured the UK as part of the English Touring Opera Spring season, culminating in a magical series of performances at Kew Gardens, attended by John himself.

2023 marks the 60th Anniversary of publication for Borka: The Adventure of a Goose with No Feathers.  Ignite Music, specialists in new classical music for young people, have been tasked by The John Burningham Estate to create a new production to mark this important achievement.

The libretto & score are ready, the puppets are almost done, the set is being built, and the cast have been chosen.  It won't be long now until Borka takes her next flight!

BORKA R&D AT SNAPE MALTINGS NOVEMBER 2022

Borka the Opera: 60 years of a children's classic

This year sees the return of Borka: The Opera based on John Burningham's picture book.  Ignite spent two days in November at the Jerwood Kiln Studio in Snape Maltings doing some Research & Development on this fantastic piece, working on the production and playing with puppets, as well as some amazing singers!

BORKA: The Adventures of a Goose with No Feathers

Our 2023 project was an opera for young people based on John Burningham’s classic picture book

Ignite Music celebrates 60 years since the publication of John Burningham’s touching tale, Borka: The Adventures of a Goose with no Feathers, with a magical 45 minute children’s opera by Tim Yealland (Librettist) and Russell Hepplewhite (Composer) aimed at 5-7 years but suitable for all the family.

Borka, the goose, is different from her brothers and sisters, she has no feathers! When her family fly south for the winter, Borka, begins her own journey of discovery, making new friends, understanding it’s ok to be different, and ultimately finding her forever home.

Weaving live music, drama, singing, puppetry, and animation, four classically trained singers are accompanied by viola, bassoon & percussion.
